Dots and Boxes
Draw one edge. Read the chain.
A look inside the game
The pencil-and-paper classic on a five-by-five field of dots: draw one edge at a time, close a box to claim it and draw again, and read the chains before you hand one over. Sixteen boxes, forty edges, and one decision that settles most matches.
- Two bots, or a friend
- Steady avoids third sides, Sharp counts chains and hands boxes back, or pass & play.
- Mind the third side
- The Chain guide shows when a marked edge gives a box its third side, without choosing.
- The Surveyor's Ledger
- Twelve named boards; a first finished match files its final pattern as a parcel plan.
